XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, and Windows. Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software developers have contributed to XBMC, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.
While XBMC functions very well as a standard media player application for your computer, it has been designed to be the perfect companion for your HTPC. Supporting an almost endless range of remote controls, and combined with its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, XBMC feels very natural to use from the couch and is the ideal solution for your home theater.
Currently XBMC can be used to play almost all popular audio and video formats around. It was designed for network playback, so you can stream your multimedia from anywhere in the house or directly from the internet using practically any protocol available. Use your media as-is: XBMC can play CDs and DVDs directly from the disk or image file, almost all popular archive formats from your hard drive, and even files inside ZIP and RAR archives. It will even scan all of your media and automatically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. There are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations. Once installed, your computer will become a fully functional multimedia jukebox.
It is difficult to put into words all that XBMC can do, head to the gallery to see some examples, or take the plunge and download it today.
What's New:
The dark night of waiting is finally over. Because here it is. The stable release of XBMC 13.0 Gotham edition. It has been months of hard work, improvements and testing since the 12.x releases. There have been around 530 commits (chunks of code change) done by 51 developers during this time. Also a large group of translators who aided in making the user interface available in your local language. So we would like to thank every one, inside and outside of Team XBMC for their hard work and effort to make this possible. Not to forget all users who have been using the monthly and nightly builds, helping us test this upcoming release, and all third-party software libraries we use.
The past year we have kept you informed with our monthly blog posts of all the exciting new features added to this final release. Now, let’s review a few of those features we’re particularly excited about.
Android Hardware Decoding
Since 2012 July 12, the single most requested feature has been hardware decoding in Android, and with XBMC 13 we are finally able to make that feature a reality. XBMC should run on Android 4.0 and higher and is offered now in two separate builds, namely ARM and x86, which are the hardware architectures of the device. You would need to consult your device specifications before you download XBMC for Android, though the vast majority of Android devices run on ARM hardware.
Raspberry Pi and Android speed improvements
Since the release of Frodo a lot of effort has been put into getting XBMC to run smoother on lower powered platform like the famous Raspberry Pi and of course Android. All this effort has paid off and the experience of using these devices has become much more polished and satisfying than ever before. In particular, opening your libraries, browsing through them, loading images and starting videos have all seen dramatic speed increases.
Stereoscopic 3D Rendering
For you lovers of 3D out there, we are also pleased to say that we now support 3D movies encoded in the following formats: SBS, TAB, anaglyph, and interlaced (on supported platforms for passive TVs). Unfortunately, XBMC cannot yet support 3D blurays and cannot provide hardware acceleration for FullSBS/TAB movies (therefore limiting those videos to relatively high powered CPUs).
Improved Touchscreen Support
XBMC on touchscreens now supports gesture controls during video playback, as well as supporting swiping controls in navigation.
Improved UPnP capabilities
gotham-upnpplayusingInstances of XBMC throughout the house can now “speak” with each other and with other UPnP devices. Support now includes more advanced library browsing as well as “Play using…” functions, allowing XBMC to tell another device on the network to play a certain media file.
So you can browse the UPnP library on your tablet and send a video from that library straight to you main XBMC HTPC, similar to Apple’s Airplay and Google’s casting features.
Additionally when watching videos from the XBMC UPnP server, watch status will be updated so you don’t have to remember what shows you’ve already watched.
Dramatic Audio Engine Improvements
The Audio Engine introduced with XBMC 12.0 “Frodo” has been reworked to be simpler, faster, with better quality and less likelihood of breaking in XBMC 13 across all platforms. You may also notice that some users will need to reconfigure their audio settings. This is caused by the audio improvements and restructuring of the settings systems. However this should be more intuitive and user friendly than it was in XBMC 12 thanks to improvements in Settings.
On Linux there is additional good news for Desktop users who don’t use XBMC as a standalone HTPC through OpenELEC or XBMCbuntu. XBMC will now cooperate nicely with the pulseaudio server and will provide real pulseaudio support. This is a behavior change, make sure to read the PulseAudio XBMC wiki page to learn more.
Settings Improvements
From the user perspective, three major changes will be introduced that should dramatically improve usability in XBMC settings.
First, settings have been broken down into levels starting at beginner and going all the way up the scale to expert level. The typical XBMC user should never need to go very far past the Standard settings. If installing XBMC for friends or family, it is highly encouraged that you move the settings down to Beginner level. And if a setting has disappeared that you typically expect to see, definitely browse through the settings levels, as it likely has been hidden on a more advanced level.
Second, every setting now includes a description, which may be found at the bottom of the settings page on the default Confluence skin. If a setting title is odd or is otherwise confusing, this description is intended to clear up the purpose of the setting and the result of changing it.
Third, every setting page now includes a Reset to Default option so that if you find yourself completely unable to return to a usable state in XBMC, you can always start fresh without having to perform a complete reinstall. Importantly, resetting one group of settings to default does not affect any others. So if you have video settings just right, but audio is screwed up, you can reset audio without affecting video.
Making Subtitle Search Better
This change should give subtitle add-on developers a great deal more latitude for implementing changes and fixes without needing to wait for other add-on devs to submit similar fixes, all to the benefit of the user experience. From the user perspective, the only significant change will be in the way a subtitle search service is downloaded. The user will need to select and download their preferred subtitle add-on before starting a movie and searching for subtitles. At present there are 19 to choose from.
An Extended Python and JSON-RPC API for developers
While this feature may not be as immediately noticeable upon install, it could ultimately be one of the most important changes of XBMC 13. With the extension of the API, users should soon be able to control virtually every aspect of XBMC without once touching the XBMC UI. Developers will now have unprecedented opportunity to make even more powerful remote control apps, web GUIs, and XBMC add-ons. For example, with the Official XBMC Remote for iOS users can now configure every single setting in XBMC without once opening the settings window in XBMC itself.
We look forward to the community taking advantage of this extended API and creating some extraordinary features in the future.
Yet More Features
- Update to FFMPEG v1.2 which we use for audio/video playback
- Stereo audio can now be up-mixed to 5.1 and sent through optical/SPDIF devices
- Various visual changes throughout the skin which should improve usability and logic.
- Improve the handling of subtitle downloading and selection
- Extend and improve the User-interface Engine which developers use to create a variety of skins to be used.
- Drop of support for Windows XP. Due to upgrades in the way we build XBMC, it is no longer possible to install or run XBMC on Windows XP. For current XP users we can suggest installing OpenELEC or XBMCbuntu as a free way to use XBMC 13 as a pure media centre.
- When initiating a library cleaning, XBMC will send a wake-on-lan request to any sleeping servers first, before cleaning the library, to ensure that content isn’t unnecessarily cleaned
- Numerous PVR fixes and updates with additional new features updated on a per-platform basis. For more info, check out our PVR wiki page
- Copy/paste support on Windows, OSX, and iOS to match copy/paste support elsewhere
- Movie sets are now user editable
- Episodic bookmarks – If episodes are not broken into individual parts (e.g. Friends episode 1 and 2 are in the same video file), a bookmark can be set that will cause launching episode 2 from the UI to go directly to the bookmark in the video file

The History of Kodi
How was Kodi created?
The original XBMC! For original Xbox (aka “Xbox 1”). This is Kodi’s precursor
Before talking about Kodi, one will have first to mention XBMC. This is a media player that was created in 2002 as the original Xbox Console. The console would not work unless you use a hardware chip. Later on, after it became a breakthrough. It starts as XBMP (Xbox Media Player.
Later, the software became XBox Media Center (XBMC) in 2004. And that is where the idea of having media organized in a good way came into being. It did not take long before other devices like computers and Smartphones was introduced.
How XBMC became Kodi
Over the years, the XBMC community has been growing. The more this happened, the newer releases came up. In 2006, version 2 was introduced on the market.
A major change did not take place since then until 2008. XBMC became version 8, from which all subsequent versions came up as indexed code names. XBMC download

In 2009, official Xbox support as a platform for XBMC was dropped. Version 9.0x codenamed Babylon was born. It was followed the same year with version 9.1x named Camelot. It was a better version as it revamped user interface through a new skin, confluence.
Version 10x came up shortly in 2010 with an unencrypted Blu-ray disc support. This version was named Dharma, under XBMC system still.
The iOS port for Apple TV 2G, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad came up in 2012 as version 11.x, Eden. The initial unstable XBMC for Android port with support on ARM and x86 was introduced in 2013, codenamed Frodo. A stable XBMC or Android was added to support ARM, MIPS, and x86 in the same year. It was named Gotham.
The year 2014 gave birth to a new name for XBMC Media Center to Kodi Home Theatre Software. Hence Kodi v14 (Helix) started operating. The last update to this came in 2015 as Kodi v15 (Isengard).
That is simply how Xbox evolved into Kodi. The software has been enhanced to operate on multiple devices and operating systems.
Google trackers are lurking on 75% of websites. Cover your tracks to protect yourself.

Development and custom builds
There are development builds you can use when updating your Kodi. Remember to backup your user data before using these features. The most popular development builds include:
Kodi Nightly build: – These are unstable test builds that have latest bug fixes and feature additions. These builds are not yet completely tested. You may experience some problems when installing or using.
Monthly Kodi build: – These are more stable than nightly builds. However, they still contain a lot of experimental new code.
Betas and release candidates: – These are builds that are still being tested to find whether or not there are bugs before they become stable releases. The builds are great for fixing major bugs.
Older stable builds: – There are older versions or XBMC/Kodi still useful for first-time users. We have outlined the instructions to follow for any of the builds above.
- Install the iFile from Cydia. It is ok if you already have the items.
- Go to mobile Safari. Any other browser that can download the files is still fine. From here, open the .deb file from any location/site for the builds above. For instance, use this Kodi .deb file: https://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/darwin.ios.xbmc-20111202-6729214-master-ios.deb, to download nightly build.
- Wait for the download to complete the select “Open in…”
- Check in the available iFiles for available apps. iFile will automatically copy the files downloaded and open the action menu. Tap on Install and tap did when clear.
- From the iFile, swipe to delete the downloaded Kodi files. The deb files are no longer necessary at this point.

Installing Kodi for Mac OS X
There is native Kodi software for Mac OS X.
- Related: See step-by-step how to install Kodi on Mac
Requirements include:
- Mac OS X 10.8 or newer versions for Kodi v17
- For Kodi v18 (Leia), all nightlies will require 10.9 and above.
- The hardware requirements are similar for all OS X 10.8
At the moment, Kodi is supported by a number of operating systems that can be connected to a TV. Even underpowered systems are well supported because of the hardware video decoding.
Step 1:- XBMC Download
First, go to the Kodi official download site and download the software. You can also download the stable builds for Mac OS. But you should not install the builds; they have a lot of bugs.
Step 2: Unpackage
Kodi is packaged as a disk image, and you will have to unpackage. This means it appears as a virtual equivalent to a CD. The whole data is contained in a single file.
Some download apps will auto-mount the Kodi image. This includes Safari. Otherwise, you will have to do the mounting yourself. Start by double-clicking the file. The disk image appears as a new device in the Finder.
Step 3: Install
Installing Kodi is very easy at this stage. It is achieved by simply dragging and dropping it to the applications folder.
Android Xbmc Install
Start by copying the application to your desired location. The best location is usually an application folder. Use drag and drop.
The application itself makes it easier by supplying a link to the Apps folder. You can drop the Kodi bundle here. It is that simple.
Using Mac OS X 10.8 and above may present some issues. It may say “Kodi cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.” The OS X Gatekeeper discourages users from downloading apps from illegal sites. This is what you need to download from the official site.
Clean up
Unmount the Kodi disk after installing. Use the eject button from the Finder sidebar. Any other files that are not relevant can be discarded with ease. Don’t forget to trash and back them somewhere for future installations.
Updating Kodi
Follow the same installation procedure above for newer versions of Kodi. You can find preserved settings and files in the user data folder.
Installing Kodi on Amazon Fire TV Stick
Installing Kodi on firestick unlocks a whole universe of content. You can stream live show and movies apart from watching your best TV shows.

Using PC
Installing Kodi on Firestick using a Windows PC is easy. Whatever device you use, you will have to turn on apps from unknown sources as well as ADB Debugging.
This method uses your PC to access the Android device’s debugging system and transfer the Kodi install file from your PC to your Android.
For windows:-
- Go to system > about > Network and write down your IP address. Download the Kodi ARM APK from https://kodi.tv after downloading Adblink from https://jocala.com/,
- Launch Adblink and click on New button then type a random name for your reference. Then either the IP address for your Firestick > save > click connect > install APK and select Kodi APK.
- Click open > confirm > locate

- Recommended RAM of 1GB
- GPU hardware must support DirectX version 9.0c.
- Recommended drive space of 16 GB or more.
Installing with Installer
This is the most common method to install Kodi on Windows, just like any other windows software.
- Click Installer (32BIT) on the download page > Run > Save >Cancel
- The installation will start automatically after the download process is complete.
- Follow the information on the screen to finish the process.
Installing Kodi for Android
The Kodi app for Android runs natively in Android OS. So just use the steps below to direct-download the Kodi APK and start streaming!
This is what the download page for Kodi Android in the Google Play Store looks like
